What the New Presidential Race Means for EVs
After a tumultuous week in American politics, the GOP has introduced a VP nominee and there’s a new top of the ticket for the Dems. Many have asked us how JD Vance and Kamala Harris impact the political and policy discussion around EVs.
The short answer is we have to wait and see. Both campaigns are in the midst of recalculating their game plans for the final hundred days. We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on how the campaigns develop their EV talking points in response to a new political reality. But, in the meantime, we want to point our readers to two pieces that talk through potential implications.
Kevin Williams at insideevs.com wrote about the anti-EV stances JD Vance has taken throughout his career. For example, Vance proposed shifting the $7,500 IRA tax credit for American-made plug-in vehicles and give them to gas and diesel ones instead. Importantly, this piece makes the point that these anti-EV policies are bad for American workers and are nicely wrapped gifts to the P.R.C.
Automotive News also took a look at what the Harris candidacy might mean for the auto industry, and the EV industry in particular. While no surprise this mostly means a continuation of Biden administration policies, they point out the stances she took before becoming VP like calling for the electrification of school buses.
