Directly Current Episode 21: Building Electric Trucks In America (with Harbinger Motors' John Harris)
Harbinger Motors is making medium-duty electric trucks right here in America. While some OEMs have rolled out light duty vans for deliveries, John Harris wants to make chassis for vehicles with higher gross vehicle weight ratings for delivery customers. It’s a niche that Harbinger is filling with proprietary motor technology, in-house battery pack assembly, and platforms they offer to others to put a body on. They’ve even partnered with others to make a plug-in hybrid RV product for camping, and they’ve got more in the pipeline.
Of course, Max and John talk tariffs—an a new and disruptive dynamic for the auto industry—and how his company is dealing with them through vertical integration. While others are poised for massive price increases, John is hopeful that (through relying on commodified raw materials instead of off-the-shelf parts) Harbinger will face fewer layers of upcharging and impact on its margins. To further assure customers, they’ve even rolled out an IRA Guarantee program ensuring customers get a $12,000 discount even if the government-subsidized tax credit for it (45W for you policy wonks) bites the dust.
